Once you are relatively secure vs the neutrals the other ai empires will start messing with you. You can not rush since the neutrals will crush you if you do and you also have an army that would be to weak to do any good rushing. This setting means you have to struggle from the start to take ressource nodes and also to defend against roaming units. any ai lower than king or emperor will not cope with the neutrals (esp the strong roaming units) good enough. If i play vs to many emperors i often lose. I mostly play vs king ai and can win the game. (sometimes with dwellings sometimes without, sometimes with seals, sometimes not). At least in AoW 2 it was hilarious to see how jacked up the Terrain would get with 8 different Domains and their Terrain altering Domains/Spells screwing with each other. I can't imagine playing on a Large/Extra Large map with 8 players though. Maybe try tweaking various settings and see if you can skew things to be more fun and less tedious? It works for me so far. Hell one game the Emperor crushed 2 Lords by himself simply because the Terrain was to his race's advantage. Other than that, I get a kick out of the Lord team trying to rapid expand/rush anyone near them. unless the AI wants to play hippie "lets all be friends and kill that human player" then it becomes tedious. With 2 more than recommended players for the map size things usually escalate quickly. Often times I have a lot of fun with these settings. I make the 3 Lords be on a Team together while the King, Emperor and I are alone so it's a 1v1v1v3. I normally do Strong Defenders, Weak/Normal Starting Army, Settler Start, Average Dwellings(cause I really like Dwellings), No Cities, Medium Map, 6 Players, 3 Lord, 1 King, 1 Emperor. Personally, I feel it comes down to the map settings and what the RNGods roll for you that really determine the game flow.
